4 Classic Clashes Between Inter and AC Milan Ahead of Saturday's Serie A Derby
Inter Milan host AC Milan on Saturday in the next instalment of the two sides' fierce rivalry.
Just two points separate both in Serie A, with Milan in sixth on 57 points, and Inter a place below on 55 points.
There have been numerous
eventful, ferociously competitive games between these two famous sides
in the past, and, although both are no longer at the top of the European
game, it remains one of football's most anticipated fixtures.
4. Inter 0-6 Milan: Serie A (2000/01)
Both
Milan clubs play their home games at the San Siro, but in the derby,
one is assigned as the home side for each league fixture.
In 2001, Inter's home
game was memorable for being the biggest margin of victory in the
history of the Derby della Madonnina. Both sides were level on points
prior to the game, although it was an underwhelming season for the Milan
giants.
Still, Milan were able
to emphatically take the bragging rights as they romped to a 6-0
victory, braces from Gianno Commandini and Andriy Shevchenko added to by
goals from Federico Giunti and Serginho.
3. Inter 0-3 Milan: Champions League Quarter-Final Second Leg (2004/05)
Another famous Milan 'away' win, although this time crowd trouble took the centre of attention.
The Rossoneri led 1-0
from the first leg in what was the last time the rivals met in the
Champions League. Shevchenko again proved the scourge of Inter as he
doubled their aggregate lead in the first half, before a disallowed
Esteban Cambiasso goal instigated anger in the crowd. Milan keeper Dida
was struck by a flare, and the game was abandoned, the visitors awarded a
3-0 win.
Milan would go on to reach the final and lost to Liverpool in Istanbul having led 3-0 at half-time.
2. Milan 0-4 Inter: Serie A (2009/10)
After a disastrous pre-season, Milan went into this derby, the second game of this season, with some renewed optimism.
They had won their first
game of the season, while Inter had been held to a draw by Bari, and
there was the chance to go five points clear of their rivals after just
two games. That didn't happen.
Instead, Inter were 3-0
up at half-time, Gennaro Gattuso was sent off for a second yellow card,
and Milan were left humiliated. Dejan Stankovic rounded off the victory
to leave Milan in disarray. Inter would go on to win the Scudetto, while
Milan would finish in third.
1. Inter 4-2 Milan: Serie A (2011/12)
Milan
were very much in the running for the Scudetto when they faced off
against Inter in May of 2012, needing a win to remain in contention with
leaders Juventus.
They hadn't accounted
for Diego Milito, though, the Argentine striker bagging a sensational
hat-trick to end the title hopes of Inter's historic rivals. Milito put
his side ahead in the first half, before a controversial Zlatan
Ibrahimovic penalty levelled the scores at half-time.
The enigmatic Swede then
put the Rossoneri in front, but two late Milito penalties turned the
game on its head. Brazilian full-back Maicon sealed the win with a
ferocious long range effort late on.
