Ekiti 2018: INEC cautions politicians against ignoring its warning
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday warned
erring politicians eyeing elective positions in 2018 governorship
election in the state to desist from ignoring its warning that it was
still premature to embark on campaigns ahead of the poll which is more
than a year away.
The electoral body threatened that
such recalcitrant politicians might soon become guests of the state
police command and the DSS for consistently ignoring its warnings.
The Administrative Secretary of
the commission in the state, Dr. Muslim Moleke, who gave the warning
yesterday, while speaking with journalists on the exercise, advised
eligible voters who have attained 18 years and above to attach
seriousness to collection of permanent voter cards as done during
registration stages.
Moleke said the exercise begins on
Thursday but described as alarming, the rate at which eligible voters
do abandon voter cards soon after registration.
He said more than 200,000 of such
permanent voter cards are currently left uncollected in the state since
the last exercise preceeding the last governorship election in the state
urging those concerned to use the coming exercise to collect the cards.
He clarified that the coming
exercise would take place only at the various INEC Local Government
Headquarters, adding that the commision would use only its bona fide
staff.
Meanwhile the Ekiti State
Government has declared Thursday and Friday as work-free days to enable
workers participate actively in the registration and revalidation of
voters’ register in the state.
The State Head of Service, Dr
Olugbenga Faseluka said in a statement yesterday, warning that it was
mandatory for all public servants to mobilize and participate in the
exercise
