Hope party plans protest over LG polls in Bauchi
The Hope Democratic Party (HDP) in Bauchi State has given Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar three weeks’ ultimatum within which to fix a date for local government elections to avert street protest.
In a letter‎ to the governor dated April 25, jointly signed by its state chairman and secretary, Alhaji Murtala Jibrin and Aliyu Shu’aibu Ali, respectively, the party stated that they arrived at the decision after a meeting held on April 22 in Bauchi.
The letter was captioned, ‘Three Weeks Ultimatum on Local Government Election/ Other Touchy Issues in Bauchi State’, and copied to ‎the Speaker, Bauchi State House of Assembly, the state Commissioner of Police, the Director, Department of State Security (DSS), the chairman, Bauchi State Independent  Electoral Commission (BAUSIEC), the state APC chairman and the chief of staff, Government House.
It said as a registered political party, it was imperative to draw the attention of the state government to important issues in the polity.
“Our party, therefore, wishes to advice that local government election date be fixed without further delay‎ as it was conducted in other states of the federation. This would in turn give credibility and sound management of resources, especially local government funds received from the federation account,” the statement said.
The party warned that in the event  the local government election was not held within the specified period, it would have no option than to organise a peaceful demonstration.
In his reaction, the state Publicity Secretary of the APC‎, Auwal Jallah, accused the HDP of an attempt to score cheap popularity by joining an already irrelevant bandwagon of critics, who saw nothing good in the transformative agenda of the governor.
