Lasun assures of an ‘enduring’ constitution

The Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Yusuf Sulaimon Lasun, has said that the amendment of the 1999 Constitution by the 7th National Assembly is stalled due to bad timing.
He stated this over the weekend in Abuja during a retreat of the special ad hoc committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution organized by PLAC and DFID.
He, however, promised that his committee would get Nigerians a constitution that would outlive everyone.
The retreat, according to him, presented an opportunity for committee members to consider the report of the Senate and House consultants on the bills on constitution review before the National Assembly.
“So far, we have considered more than 50 bills. We are here to review our reports and to consider new bills if any,” Lasun said.
The 7th Assembly had spent over N6 billion on the processes of amending the 1999 Constitution but the then president, Goodluck Jonathan, did not assent the document before he left office.
