NERC, NEMSA Probe Calabar Electrocution

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigerian Electricity Management Service Agency (NEMSA), have started investigating the recent power incident, which caused the death of about seven persons.
The development was sequel to a directive from the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, mandating the two agencies to work with the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) to unravel the factors responsible for the incident.
The statement read in part: “NERC and NEMSA have been directed to thoroughly investigate the incident and its causes and to take regulatory action as appropriate. The Federal Government had expressed sadness over the incident and death of football fans at the viewing centre in Calabar, Cross River State.
“It also identified with the families of those who lost their loved ones in the accident. Investigation would unravel the actual causes of the disaster and we promise to make the report of the investigation public at the appropriate time.”
About seven persons died while watching a football match between Manchester United and Anderlecht in a return leg of the Europe League quarterfinal match.
About 11 others were said to have been injured and getting medical attention in a hospital.
Meanwhile, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, which provides power to Calabar and other parts of the Niger Delta, said that it has started improving supply to the area.
“These improvements will enable us provide you with more reliable and efficient electricity supply. We will now be able to do things that weren’t possible before, like investing in new equipment and carrying out much needed repairs that will make the network better for us all.
“This will help accomplish our mission to enhance the vitality of the region and deliver returns to all stakeholders (customers, employees, suppliers and investors),” the statement added.
