Ex-Rep accuses politicians of greed
A former member of the House of Representatives, Gerald Irona, has blamed the failure of the political class to discharge their responsibilities effectively to selfishness occasioned by political and social interests.
Irona, who represented Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta and Oru West Federal Constituency in Imo State, stated this while presenting a paper titled, ‘The Role of the Political Class and  Religious Organisations in Entrenching Sustainable Democratic System in Nigeria’, delivered yesterday at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Ejemekwuru.
“The political class has failed in their duties,” he opined.
He said many years into the democratic experience, the system was yet to adopt mechanism and structure for reorienting the masses on a broad-based ideological political structure.
According to him, the political class had failed to command the genuine respect and support of majority of citizens, especially those who saw them “as public office hunters and self -contractors.”
“We are witnessing myriads of social problems that have ravaged the state and Nigeria, and destroyed most of what were held as our cherished values,” he said.
