Why Igbo Leaders Are Defecting To APC – Ekuri

Barr Ifeoma Ekuri is the chairperson, Igbo Vision In APC, Ogun State chapter and coordinator Dynamic Women Forum, Ado –Odo, Ota.  In this interview with AUGUSTINE ADAH; she spoke on the position of Igbos in APC and other issues. Excerpts:
What is the idea behind the formation of Igbo Vision in APC?
The Igbo Vision in the All Progressives Congress (APC) is aimed at streamlining the position of Igbos in APC. We want to be actively involved in the politics of our country. And as God would have it, the Ogun State chapter is waxing very strong; we are in 20 local government areas of the state.  It was alleged that Igbo people are not interested in politics, so we decided to wake up and not just talk the talk any more but do the talk that is what gave birth to Igbo Vision in APC.  The Lagos State publicity secretary of APC, Mr. Joe Igbokwe and other notable Igbo leaders are part of the national leadership of the organisation.  The organisation is interested in deepening democracy among the people by sensitizing the people on participatory democracy. You cannot know what is happening in the system by staying away. So the goal is to deepen the participation of Igbo in participation of the country’s democracy through APC platform.
It was alleged that Igbo people did not vote for APC in the last general election, what are you doing to change that position especially now that the 2019 elections is less than two years away?
I like that word alleged. The Igbo Vision came up before the last general elections in 2015. What I observed was that there was no proper enlightenment. In the last election most Igbo people did not even vote for PDP but stayed away from voting during the election. That is why our organisation became relevant in order to educate the people on the importance and new to vote during election. People don’t sit at home and talk about election; you make your contribution by going out to vote for candidates of your choice.  That is why our enlightenment programme has taken us to 20 local government areas in Ogun State. Though the effort is pain taking and involves a lot of sacrifice but since we are determine to do that, whatever the challenge we are prepared to face it.  I thank God that our effort is yielding result as people now understand the importance of exercising their franchise during elections than before. Though it is not easy but we are doing it.
