5 Things Learned From the Dramatic 2-2 Draw in Saturday's Milan Derby
Cristian Zapata scored the dramatic equaliser after Alessio Romangnoli had pulled one back just before injury time.
Antonio Candreva and
Mauro Icardi had originally given Stefano Pioli's side a 2-0 advantage,
but the late comeback from Vincenzo Montella's men further damages their
hopes of European football.
Here are five things learned from the derby in which Milan gave their new Chinese owners something to celebrate...
1. The Defensive Stereotype of Serie A Is Long Gone
For
too long now, people have regarded Italy's top-flight as a boring,
defensive league, where attacking football is banished in favour of
resilient defences.That stereotype has
become a myth and Saturday's derby was the perfect advert to support the
claims that Serie A is quickly becoming one of the most exciting
leagues on the planet.Drama, attack-minded
football, quality from both sides and, above all, goals capped off a
perfect game for the neutral. The halcyon days of defend first, attack
second, are long gone.
2. Both Clubs Have a Promising Future Under Chinese Ownership
The
first match between the two which can now be described as a 'Chinese
derby' truly was a resounding success for both, despite Inter
surrendering two points late on.For the first time in
years, the world was watching one of Europe's most prestigious derbies,
because in recent years, it has almost faded into obscurity. However,
this time, the world was keen to watch the bitter rivals battle it out
for sixth place.
People are intrigued to
see how the two failing giants cope under their new owners and this
global interest can only help propel them both back to the pinnacle of
Italian football.
3. Ivan Perisic Will Be a Wanted Man in the Summer
The
Croatian winger was undoubtedly Inter's finest player on the pitch and
it seems no coincidence that Pioli's side surrendered their two-goal
advantage once he departed due to a knock midway through the second
half. The 28-year-old is at the peak of his powers and gave Milan full-back Davide Calabria a torrid time.
His assist for Icardi's
goal was pure perfection and due to Inter's precarious position outside
the European places, the big boys will be coming in for one of Inter's
prized assets.
4. Gerard Deulofeu Continues His Career Renaissance
Much
like Perisic, Deulofeu was at his fleet-footed best in the derby,
torturing Inter's defence on a regular basis with his pace and dribbling
ability. He put Gary Medel to the sword all game and was the ideal outlet for the visitors every time they broke forward.
After stagnating at
Everton, moving to Milan has galvanised the Spaniard and even saw him
back into the Spanish senior squad in the latest international break. A
move back to Barcelona seems more likely with every passing game.
5. Roberto Gagliardini Is Crucial to This Inter Side
The Italian international returned to the lineup against Milan and from the off, the difference in midfield was noticeable. The dependable
23-year-old, who was brought in from Atalanta in January, dictated the
game from deep alongside Geoffrey Kondogbia, freeing up Joao Mario to
push forward and punish the Milan defence - a tactic that worked
superbly well.
His assist for
Candreva's opener was beautiful and it is clear that if Inter are to
progress as a unit, Gagliardini has to be the primary foundation in
midfield. An unsung hero for Inter.
