NGOs organise rally on education in Abuja
Civil society
groups under the umbrella of Civil Society Action Coalition on Education
for All (CSACEFA) have staged a peaceful rally in Abuja to press
government to provide quality education for all Nigerian children.
Members of different groups marched to
the National Assembly complex and Federal Ministry of Education
displaying placards with inscriptions such as ‘UBEC money should not be
in fixed deposit, use it wisely!’, ‘Increase education budget’,
‘Sanction states that refuse to access the UBEC funds’, among others.
Speaking during the rally yesterday, the
Policy Adviser of Civil Society Action Coalition on Education For All
(CSACEFA), Chioma Osuji, said the rally was to advocate for free quality
education for all children.
According to her, sustainable development goals could not be achieved without giving priority to education.
Speaking earlier, the National Moderator
of CSACEFA, Kabiru Aliyu, appealed to government to review the UBE Act
of nine years compulsory free education to 12 to accommodate the senior
secondary school level.
Addressing the group at the main
entrance of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Minister of
Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who was represented by Dr. Muhammad Bello
Umar, assured that government would look at their demands and act
accordingly.
