LG polls: Labour Party threatens to sue LASIEC over nomination fee
The Labour Party on Friday threatened to sue Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for imposing nomination fee on candidates contesting forthcoming council polls in the state.
The party’s Secretary in the state, Mr Bolaji Oshinowo, issued the threat in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He said the fee was an attempt by the commission to prepare victory for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, but said that his party would resist it.
Oshinowo said the imposition of the fee was an aberration as it was unheard of in the country’s democratic experience.
“We at Labour Party are opposed to the nomination fee being levied on candidates contesting the council polls by LASIEC.
“We think it is an aberration and a grand plan by the commission to prepare victory for the ruling APC in the state.
“How do you explain a situation where candidates are asked to cough out between N50, 000 and N100, 000 just to contest an election?
“We are prepared for them and we can only advise LASIEC to suspend the illegal fee, otherwise they will have a day with us in court,’’ he said.
Oshinowo said that the suit the party planned to file would be different from the one filed by the National Conscience Party (NCP) on the same issue.
He said that apart from the fee issue, the party was ready for the election and was mobilising members for that purpose.
The party scribe added that the primaries would only be conducted in areas where many aspirants were contesting for seats and listed the areas as Badagry, Amuwo-Odofin, Ikorodu and Epe.
He said that the essence of the primary was to ensure that flag-bearers emerged through a transparent process as the party would put up a strong showing in the election.
“We will definitely do well at the election. Our party is popular with the people. We are going to spring surprises,’’ he said.
LASIEC fixed July 22 for the polls and July 29 for run-off, if the need arises. (NAN)
