Lamido out of prison
Dutse Chief
Magistrate’s Court II in Jigawa State yesterday granted bail to a
former governor of the state, Sule Lamido, based on self-recognition.
The former governor, who was arraigned
before the court on Tuesday was remanded in prison custody after the
magistrate sought to look at his bail application.
Lamido was arraigned on four count
charges of inciting disturbance, disturbance of public peace, defamation
of character and criminal intimidation.
Ruling on the bail application, Chief
Magistrate Mohammed Usman Lamin said the evidence tendered by the
prosecuting counsel objecting the bail application of the accused was
worthless.
He said the argument that Lamido would
jump bail if released from prison, or that other people would commit
similar offence and that the peace of the state would be threatened was
misleading and therefore lacked merit.
The chief magistrate, therefore, granted the application and adjourned the case to July 5 for mention.
Lamido was arrested by the police in
Kano following a petition written by the Jigawa State government which
accused him of inciting statements. He was on Tuesday taken to the
magistrate court in Dutse and thereafter to prison where he stayed for
two days.
